On Saturday 8th Oct. twenty one members of Kilkenny Flower Club travelled to Dublin to view the many stunning exhibits in the Inter-Club Competitions hosted by A.O.I.F.A. in Stillorgan Park Hotel. The competitions are divided into various catergories and Kilkenny Flower Club submitted an entry called “It’s a Mad Tea Party” under the category “Feasting and Fantasy” There were many worthy entries from various clubs from around the country but we are delighted to announce Kilkenny came first.

Maura Hanrahan, Lin Cowley and Anne Power put Trojan work into the exhibit and did Kilkenny and their club proud.  Unfortunately Lin wasn’t able to be there on the day.

Club members thoroughly enjoyed the outing to Wexford gardens. The tour started with tea and scones in Bunclody Golf Club.

The first visit was to Tombrick Gardens, Ballycarney. Walter Kelly gave us an interesting detailed tour. It is 1.5 acres, many walks through mixed borders, a large duck pond and exotic birds.

Then Coolaught Gardens, Clonroche. Harry and Caroline Deacon and family run their cottage stlye garden packed with unusual plants and full of nooks and garden “rooms” We started the tour with tea, scones and lovely lemon cake.

There is a fine selection of plants for sale with some unusual roses and we took full advantage by purchasing many plants.

Seán – our bus driver was amazed when the boot was packed to capacity with an assortment of plants, even a tree.

The last visit was to Mary Egan’s Garden, Adamstown. Mary gave a talk with slide show in May so it was great to see all the plants in situ. Mary has a splendid vegetable plot too.

We finished the day with dinner at Brandon House Hotel, New Ross, the meal was served promptly by friendly staff.

It was appreciated by all. An enjoyable day out.

Garden Trail

On Thursday 8th July the Club members headed off to visit two gardens.

It rained and rained but in spite of the miserable weather everyone enjoyed the day.

The first visit was to “Fruitlawn Garden” –  Abbeyleix.

The owner is Arthur Shackelton and it is difficult to believe it is just ten years in the making.

Then on to Johnstown to visit Henry and Ruby Miller’s stunning garden.

Bloom in the Park

The Club had it’s annual outing to “Bloom in the Park” on Friday the 4th June. This event gets bigger crowds every year.

The weather could not have been better, sunshine all day long.

The flower arrangements were spectacular, many show gardens, a food hall, hen houses, green houses, all kinds of gardening equipment  and the wonderful OPW walled garden.

Here is a selection of members enjoying the day at “Bloom”
